More than 500 people turned out to see Bromham Carnival’s procession on Saturday, the culmination of two weeks of summer fun.

The procession set off from Pound Field at 2pm, led by carnival queen 15-year-old Georgina Parkin and her attendant royalty in horse-drawn carriage, lent for the day by local company Jackson’s Hire.
The queen attendant was 12-year-old Charlotte Bassett, the princess Faye Dyke, eight, princess attendant Chloe Ringstead, nine, Butterfly Princess Bobbie Clarke, 12, her attendant Imogen Mornement, 11, Prince Harry Clarke, nine, and his attendant Kiel Bassett, nine.
The Fairy Princess was four-year-old Alice Lawrence and the Young Prince was Cane Spencer, six.
Carnival co-secretary Mo Edwards said: “It was a lovely procession and we had a lot of people come along to see it. We had lots of walking entries with the Lion, the Witch and Wardrobe; the Owl and Pussycat and Bob the Builder among the most memorable.”
It was the culmination of a fortnight of community events, including a skittles competition, bingo, quiz nights, wheelbarrow races and a Mad Hatter’s tea party.
There was a fun horse racing night at the Greyhound and the fortnight kicked off with a very popular treasure hunt and classic car display. Mrs Edwards said: “We had slightly fewer people to the events than in previous years, but that’s only to be expected in the present economic climate.
“All in all, it has been a big success and Saturday went very well.”
The procession was followed by a fair, opened by Georgina Parkin on the Jubilee Field. Devizes samba band Oi Sambistas and the Wyvern Band played and majorette groups Angels with Attitude from Trowbridge and Britannia Majorettes from Swindon took part.

The culmination of Bromham Carnival is on Saturday with the procession.
This year is the carnival’s 50th anniversary and to mark the special occasion the organisers are appealing for past Bromham Carnival queens to come along.
Carol Clarke, joint carnival secretary, said: “We are hoping to have a float for former carnival queens so they can take part in the procession. We have had about six past carnival queens contact us so far but it would be good to see as many as possible.”
Hundreds of people watch the procession that sets off from the Pound playing field in Bromham at 2pm. Those taking part in the procession assemble at 1.15pm in time for the judging at 1.30pm.
Devizes samba band Oi Sambistas!, the Wyvern Band and Britannia Majorettes are among the entertainers who will be in the procession alongside local people who will be walking or on floats.
The procession finishes at the Jubilee Field by the Social Centre where the carnival fair will be opened by this year’s carnival queen, Georgina Parkin, 15.
On the field will be a fun fair, various stalls including stocks, a barbecue and beer tent.
The entertainment continues in the evening, from 5pm to midnight, when local bands play for free in Bromfest.

Next year, 2009, will be the 48th Bromham Carnival.
As we approach its’ 50th. Anniversary, perhaps it is time to ask why there is one at all.
Originally it began to help raise funds for our wonderful Social Centre. However, evenafter that was built and occupied, Carnival continued. It seems to me that there are 3 main reasons to keep it going.
1) To delight and entertain the children of the village (however old they are)
2) To raise some money for charities both within and outside Bromham.
3) To enhance the idea that Bromham is a community full of amazing individuals, but who can also come together to enjoy entertainment. Do you have any other ideas?
Maybe you feel it is ‘old hat’ and irrelevant in today’s world. I feel it has a link, perhaps tenuous, to the much older traditions of village gatherings in previous centuries. At least it gets some youngsters away from virtual life and into reality for a short time.
Each year the small Carnival Committee plans, budgets, argues, and physically runs all the events during Carnival fortnight. It is a fair bit of work, but also great fun, especially when something is really well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Can you tell where this is going? Yes, I am appealing for some more folk to come and join in. Why not give it a try?

UNSEASONAL weather did nothing to discourage a large crowd from turning out to watch Bromham Carnival's procession on Saturday afternoon.
It was probably the largest carnival procession seen for many years and was led off by Carnival Queen Rosie Walden and her attendant royalty in a splendid open carriage drawn by a pair of matching black horses.
There were a great many walkers in the fancy dress competition and a total of ten floats.
Also helping to swell the throng were band and dance troupes including Angels with Attitude from Trowbridge, Jax Hip Hops from Bromham, the Wyvern Band and the Oi Sambistas samba band from Devizes.
First prize in the adult walkers was won by the Lion Fish and first prize in the family walking group was won by the Black-Eyed Peas.
I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here was the theme of the winner of the pubs and clubs section, while Twelve Dancing Prim-cesses won the family section.
In the schools section Bromham Busy Kids took the first prize with Under the Sea.
The parade wended its way from the Pound Field to the Jubilee Field cheered on a by the huge crowd.
At the Jubilee Field there were many stalls and other attractions, including cream teas served by the Bromham WI.
An outdoor music festival, Bromfest, started up at 5.30pm with seven bands playing throughout the evening, despite a shower of rain at 8pm.
Saturday saw the culmination of a week of events organised to celebrate the carnival.
The skittles competition was won by Steve Dolman's team after a tight play-off and 30 youngsters took part in the carnival junior bingo competition.
In a special gardens competition held in memory of former carnival chairman Ron Breach, the first prize for an ornamental garden was won by Lesley Eacopo of Durlett.
First prize in the pots and baskets competition was won by Eileen Croaker of Greystones and the prize for the best area was won by the High Street.
