MONDAY CLUB NEWS

When we came back after Easter we had a very happy occasion to celebrate.  On April 11th Vic and Doreen Reed had reached their 65th Wedding Anniversary, and so on the next Monday they brought in the most beautiful iced and decorated cake for us all to share.  Sixty five years of marriage is represented by Blue Sapphire, and following the theme Vic and Doreen were dressed in blue, and the Club gave them a flowering plant in a blue pot, and we had blue wrapped chocolates with our lunch time coffee.  Everyone toasted the smiling couple and we sang “Happy Anniversary to You” and wished them both continuing health and happiness.  Following this Vic and Doreen went head to head as captains for the kurling teams, and sad to say chivalry went out the window as Vic’s team steamed to a mighty win!

Earlier this year at the AGM we had discussed whether we should continue to hire a coach and go out and about for lunch, or use our cars to have a lunch out locally.  As the lift coach costs us around £250, it was agreed that this is perhaps not the best use of our limited funds, and we would try the local option, and subsidise the extra cost of the meals from club funds.  So this was why on April 23rd we abandoned Kevin and his lovely meals (or perhaps gave him a welcome day off from us?) and went to the Oliver Cromwell for lunch.  Karen and Les looked after us well with their usual delicious food.  We had a limited choice menu, which was served up piping hot and enjoyed by all.  Then it was back to the Social Centre to finish our day with bingo.

The following week Caroline Culley gave us a short presentation in the morning on her work as Good Neighbour Coordinator for Bromham and Rowde.  Caroline is well known to us as our Club Secretary, and has also popped in to chat to members from time to time, so this was an interesting update on the ways she is able to help people in the community.  In the afternoon of the same day we had a visit from Louise Hull who is an Osteopath from Melksham.  She explained how she approaches her work from a holistic perspective, and offered sound advice on how to keep as mobile as possible.  We were able to handle and study up close a spine and a skull that she brought with her.

Our first Club day in May after another Bank Holiday found us enjoying a new entertainer,

Martin Smith, who proved to be just what was needed on a grey Monday afternoon. He  provided a very appealing mix of music and comedy, and before long we were singing along with him and relishing his volley of jokes.

A good uplifting afternoon’s entertainment!

We still have room for more members if you could do with a bit of company each week. If you would like to come on a Monday at the Social Centre do give me a ring.  We can provide transport if you live in Bromham or Rowde.

MONDAY CLUB NEWS

Just a short report this month as we are now into the time of year when Bank Holidays begin to interrupt our Mondays.  As well as our usual whist and kurling afternoons, we have only had one speaker since last month’s Monday Club News was written.  This was Jo Blake who came from the Dog’s Trust Rehoming Centre at Salisbury to tell us about the work carried on there.  Using a power point presentation she showed us the living quarters that have been built for the stray and unwanted dogs who find their way there.  As she said, it would be a nice place to go for a holiday herself!  The dogs are made very comfortable and welcome – often for the first time in their lives, and the numbers that find a new home are amazingly high.  The Dog’s Trust is the UK’s largest dog charity, caring for more than 16,000 dogs every year nationwide, and being a charity relies heavily on donations and fund raising.

This year we will be holding our annual Tea Party with Bring and Buy stall on August 13th at 2pm, in the Bromham Social Centre.  We do hope very much that our friends and supporters will join us on that day for a chat and a cup of tea.  I know it’s a long way ahead, but if it’s on the calendar you may remember!

Before then we will be meeting every week except Bank holidays, so why not come and join us – we’re very happy for you to dip your toe in the water, and then if the Club is not for you at least you’ve tried it – no hard feelings.

We still have room for more members if you could do with a bit of company each week. If you would like to come on a Monday at the Social Centre do give me a ring.  We can provide transport if you live in Bromham or Rowde.

MONDAY CLUB NEWS

During the winter it seems as if night is approaching when we leave the Club at three thirty to go home - but now the days are stretching out the lightness is a welcome development.  Even though we need the rain now, we have certainly benefited from the dry arrivals and departures this winter!  Our numbers have dropped rather over the last few months mainly due to long term absences for health reasons, and if you’re one of our Monday friends, we really do miss you I can assure you!

Last year we were fortunate to have Rachel Day helping us each week through the summer as part of her work experience – and we had a special treat a few weeks ago when she came again at half term.  Rachel is a very talented artist and she brought along a selection of her work and mounted a display for us to all view – comprising a wide selection of styles and materials.

We had a trip back to the Forties another week when “Music and Mirth” sang us a selection of wartime songs, interspersed with John’s jokes.

The foursome had taken the trouble to dress the part which added to the atmosphere.

We have also been to Peru and the Amazon

(with a zero carbon footprint !) and witnessed through the skill of John Drew’s camera a very different landscape and way of life.  John’s detailed descriptions of all his and Carol’s adventures brought the scenes vividly to life –

(how does he remember it all?!!)

We have a little competition going on the ten pin bowling Wiisport to make things more interesting.  One of our members, Margaret, brought in a little trophy cup so we are vying for top score achieved on any one day over the year.  Last year it was won by……..yes you guessed it – Margaret!

James’ exercise group has dwindled in numbers a bit lately, but a hard core of stalwarts still assemble and swivel their bits with good effect.  But we feel better afterwards (I think?)

Woven through all our activities is the pleasure of our weekly meals which Kevin and Louise and their staff are still providing for us.  As a change we have been having soup before our main course instead of pudding afterwards on some weeks, and this seems to appeal to most of our members.  Lovely tasty flavours and chunky bread and butter go down a treat, especially on wintry days.  Sound delicious?  Why not come and join us – we’re very happy for you to dip your toe in the water, and then if the Club is not for you at least you’ve tried it – no hard feelings.

We still have room for more members if you could do with a bit of company each week. If you would like to come on a Monday at the Social Centre do give me a ring.  We can provide transport if you live in Bromham or Rowde.

MONDAY CLUB NEWS

It seems right to start by saying how saddened we have all been by the sudden death of Margaret Beater.   Margaret has been the Secretary of the Monday Club for many years and has regularly brought her cheerful common sense into our committee meetings.  However, even more significantly she has transported our members to and fro on a weekly basis in all winds and weathers.  She has been a very generous supporter of the Monday Club and we will miss her enormously.

Our numbers attending recently have been a bit down due to some of our members’ health issues, but we have been pleased to welcome two new members over the last few weeks, and we will be equally pleased to welcome back again those who are unwell.

We have again been fortunate to receive gifts from St. Nicholas harvest thanksgiving services, and we would like to thank every one who contributed very much indeed.

Talking of Church ‘ matters’, we were delighted by a visit from Rev. John Rees who talked to us about experiences and incidences in his life that had ultimately led him to train for the Ministry.  We all felt we knew him and his family more closely as a result of this.

Back in August we had a return visit from Susan Marshfield who kept us all amused as she recounted her experiences during boating holidays taken with her family and friends.

Dennis Powney kindly joined us another afternoon to show us again the photograghs he had taken every day over a year of life in Bromham 2001.  As this was now 10years ago, we certainly saw some changes, both in people and in some of the buildings.  We only got as far as the end of April, so Dennis will have to be persuaded to return!

The clothing company Border Fashions visited us again – luckily for us they only have to come from Calne so they are still prepared to visit even though our purchases are small.

As I write we are yet to have our Autumn Fair, but I hope to bring news of it’s success next time!

We still have room for more members if you could do with a bit of company each week. If you would like to join us on a Monday at the Social Centre do give me a ring.  We can provide transport if you live in Bromham or Rowde.

MONDAY CLUB NEWS

THIS YEAR OUR ANNUAL AUTUMN FAIR WILL BE HELD ON SATURDAY OCTOBER 15TH FROM 2:30pm UNTIL 4pm.   We would love to see you there!

We’ve booked the sun for the afternoon, so with luck we can all arrive in the dry and enjoy our annual fundraising event.

The summer has slipped gently by as the weeks progress, and although there has only been one Monday that could be described as hot, we have mostly been able to soak up the sun through the skittle alley windows.  After our few weeks of excitement in June and July, we have since settled down to more routine activities, although we did go on a balloon ride over Devizes one week!  This of course was from the safety of our chairs and courtesy of Pauline Hawkins with slides of her own experience.  We needed a bit of interpretation to follow where we were as everything looks so different from the air, and there were certainly some surprises.  As usual Pauline rounded off with some humorous pictures of various animal antics.

Another week we entertained ourselves with a game of Quiz Bingo, a mixture of skill and chance, or shall we say memory and chance, as it’s not only knowing the answers, it’s remembering them too!

As a change from whist we got out the Kurling again last week.  With two teams of eleven a side we had a spirited battle ably captained by Dave and Fred.  The blues won by a fairly large margin this time despite some determined challenges, and top score for the afternoon went to Doreen.

We still have room for more members if you could do with a bit of company each week.  Come and remind yourself that in spite of the daily news there’s plenty to be happy about generally, and also you can enjoy a lovely two course hot meal cooked at the Greyhound.  So if you would like to join us on a Monday at the Social Centre do give me a ring.  We can provide transport if you live in Bromham or Rowde.

MONDAY CLUB NEWS

THIS YEAR OUR ANNUAL AUTUMN FAIR WILL BE HELD ON SATURDAY OCTOBER 15TH FROM 2:30pm UNTIL 4pm.

We do hope all our loyal supporters will be able to come as usual and help us with our main fund raising event. If you haven’t been before you will find a warm welcome and lots of stalls, raffles etc

and of course a cup of tea.

Talking of loyal supporters, we were very pleased to receive a generous donation of £100 from Rowde Parish Council recently.  Also we were relieved when our grant from Wiltshire Council arrived, which ensures that we can carry on for this year at least.  No doubt the future remains uncertain.

Well the day dawned when Greta (Power) came back to Club and we were all able to see her again – and very well she looked too!  Greta and her daughter Margaret joined us all for lunch – Kevin’s lovely beef roast – and then stayed for afternoon tea.  This was an open invitation to all, and many of our friends and supporters dropped in to chat and enjoy tea and cake.  To celebrate Greta reaching 100 years we presented her with a card, flowers and small gifts, which included a photographic memory book of her times at Monday Club.

We have had quite an eventful few weeks, as the following Monday, July 4th, we were invited over to Rowde Primary School to watch a dress rehearsal of their performance of Joseph and the Amazing Technicoloured Dreamcoat.  It was a joy to witness the youthful vitality as the well loved songs were performed with skill and enthusiasm, and the costumes were evidence of much dedicated hard work.  We felt sure the final show would be a great success.

Following this the very next Monday was our summer outing for lunch.  Carefully driven by Glen, the coach took us via Rowde, Yarnbrook and Westbury to our destination at the Frome Flyer.  For a change we had glorious weather for our day out, and the sun blazed down as we arrived to find a new spacious room had been built which had been allocated to us.  Almost brand new with nice comfy seats, we were soon settled in.  Following the meal Glen brought us home the more direct way through Southwick, and we arrived back in Bromham to find our additional drivers waiting to welcome us and whisk us off home.

We still have room for more members if you could do with a bit of company each week.  So if you would like to join us on a Monday at the Social Centre do give me a ring.  We can provide transport if you live in Bromham or Rowde.

MONDAY CLUB NEWS

All the Spring Bank Holidays are now safely behind us and we have a clear run of Mondays until the end of August.  Hopefully when we’ve had enough rain we will see the sunshine again to warm us – we’ve struggled a bit the last few weeks to remember that it’s summer!  However a return visit from Tony Goldsmith and Pete Lamb brought the sun out for us on one of our Club days.   With Tony on his keyboard and Pete on his guitar the afternoon came alive as we listened to their wonderful music making.

Many years ago the Club “adopted” a donkey at the Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary in Devon.  He was called Daniel P and was one of a group that provided riding for disadvantaged children.  Our annual adoption contribution, along with many other adopters, funded this valuable work, and for many years we have received regular bulletins about Daniel’s antics.  Well the time came for him to retire, and so we have now chosen another donkey to receive our continuing support.  Out of six possibles, one was a clear favourite in the voting, and so we now have Timothy.  We will follow his progress with interest!

Last week we welcomed back Entertainment Plus, and enjoyed another vibrant afternoon as Jill and Bernie entertained us.  Jill’s ability on her piano accordion is impressive and she played a delightful medley of well known songs which we joined with Bernie to sing along to.

Another of our members reached the grand age of 90 in May as Florrie joined the group, bringing the current total to five.  A magnificent cake was provided by Florrie’s family, (which she kindly shared with us all!), to celebrate the event.

We still have room for more members if you could do with a bit of company each week. As we said last month, we could actually do with you, as our numbers are falling a bit and it would be nice to have a few new joiners.  So if you would like to join us on a Monday at the Social Centre do give me a ring.  We can provide transport if you live in Bromham or Rowde.

Monday Club News

Just in case you missed reading Monday Club News in last month’s magazine, this year we will be holding our usual Afternoon Tea Party on June 27th at 2pm (no Bring and Buy this year).  As always we would like to invite all our friends and supporters to join us, and also to welcome anyone who would like to come along and find out a bit more about the Monday Club.  The reason for bringing the date forward this year is that Greta Power will be 100 in June and we have invited her to be our guest of honour.  Many of you will know that Greta was a helper right from the beginning of the Club in 1984, and was a regular member up until last year, so it will be lovely to have her with us again.

We have had an extra long break this Spring as the two Bank Holiday Monday’s were next to each other.  But as expected the Melksham Pearlies sent us off with another of their colourful and joyful performances of all the well known songs.

And finally we all got back together again on May 9th, caught up on the news, did our exercises, eagerly tucked into Kevin’s delicious gammon, pineapple and chips followed by cheese and biscuits, and enjoyed our bingo followed by a few hands of whist.  Back to routine – lovely!

We still have room for more members if you could do with a bit of company each week. We could actually do with you, as our numbers are falling a bit and it would be nice to have a few new joiners.  So if you would like to join us on a Monday at the Social Centre do give me a ring.  We can provide transport if you live in Bromham or Rowde.

MONDAY CLUB NEWS

This fresh year is flying by as Mondays come and go, and the recent good weather has been a real bonus.  We have missed some of our regular members lately for various reasons – so to anyone who is not yet back with us we send greetings and best wishes.

We have been very fortunate to be joint beneficiaries, along with Busy Kids, of the proceeds from Sue’s Garage Sale at St. Edith’s Marsh back in March.  As a result of everyone’s generosity in buying, and particularly Sue’s in donating, we received £205 which will help our finances considerably.

As we will have a rather flat spell with so many Bank Holidays before long, we have been packing in a lot of different activities these last few weeks.  We have had a visit from Jessica of Ridgeway Lifeline who gave us full details of what’s available on the market to help summon assistance in a crisis, plus other useful items.  Then we had another musical afternoon with Scott who seems to have an inexhaustible supply of lovely songs in his head.  Another Kurling match between the blues and the reds gave rise to some healthy competition.  This time it was Vic and Doreen who captained the teams, on their Wedding Anniversary.  “Girl Power” won with Doreen’s blues romping home after a shaky start! ( Hopefully no disruption of domestic harmony as a result?)  And as we break for two Mondays just before Easter we will go out with a bang to the sights and songs of the ever popular Melksham Pearlies.

This year we will be holding our usual Afternoon  Tea Party on June 27th (no Bring and Buy this year).  We would like to invite all our friends and supporters to join us as always, and also to welcome anyone who would like to come along and find out a bit more about the Monday Club.  The reason for bringing the date forward this year is that Greta Power will be 100 in June and we have invited her to be our guest of honour.  Many of you will know that Greta was a helper right from the beginning of the Club in 1984, and was a regular member up until last year.
