Chittoe Heath Methodist Chapel

This was originally built in the centre of Chittoe in 1840 as a Primitive Methodist chapel. It was on the Chippenham Methodist Circuit but relied mainly on local preachers. In 1845 the Anglican church was built nearby and dissension arose between the two congregations. The Methodist singing was very loud and enthusiastic and often interupted the church services. This situation continued until the 1880s when, in 1882, Major Spicer paid for the chapel to be moved and rebuilt at Chittoe Heath. A schoolroom was added in 1914 and this incorporated the original chapel foundation stone that had not been used when the chapel was rebuilt. During the 20th century a special feature of the chapel was Good Friday afternoon and evening services with a special tea in the schoolroom. The chapel flourished through most of the 20th century.
