Although the County Council may arrange school transport for certain pupils / students at a particular school, it must be noted that any such travel and transport arrangements by Wiltshire County Council for any individual will have been made according to strict assessment using national standards. This assessment is based largely on the following criteria:
- Where you live;
- Whether or not you are attending your designated school for transport; and
- Family income.

As your selected school has yet to produce a Travel Plan, below is a range of data held by the County Council which may assist you in identifying sustainable ways of travelling on the potential school journey. All schools must develop a Travel Plan by March 2010 – it will be worth checking with the school direct to check on their progress towards this requirement, but also for further information on sustainable travel and transport.
To get the contact details and see a typical example route of your journey home to this school by car, visit theSchools Directory.
The tables linked below, read in conjunction with the actual mode of travel above, may enable some conclusions to be made concerning whether or not pupils are able to travel already with relative ease and safety over reasonable distances to school without using a car – the more children that live nearer the school and who travel on foot or by bike, the more likely it is that you can too. A reasonable distance for walking to school is about one mile for primary aged children, two miles for secondary aged pupils. These distances increase when cycling. Always speak with the school direct to discuss your own individual travel needs however.
Please Note: The distance information shown here is taken on the basis of “as the crow flies”, and is not that distance used to measure entitlement to free school transport – this is measured by actual route.
* in some instances, a designated school can be different according to whether it is designated for admission purposes or transport purposes. If you are in any doubt as to whether the school is designated for transport purposes, email educationtransport@wiltshire.gov.uk
