Road repairs under fire

WILTSHIRE County Council may have to look again at the junction in Bromham which their contractors have been working on for the last six months.

As work approaches completion on the £140,000 contract at the junction of the A342 and A3102, it appears that the aim of cutting down the number of car crashes there has not worked.

Philip Collins, who runs the farmers' market on the corner, said that, to his knowledge, three crashes have taken place there in the last week.

He said: "But the traffic is a least a lot slower, so the crashes are less serious, no more than minor shunts.

"What is more important is the effect the work is having on my business. The lane they have put in for traffic turning in here is not wide enough.

"It is a problem made at the planning stage that was never picked up and the person responsible has now left, so there is no-one to complain to. I have spoken to the county council and they said they will be looking at the situation."

A spokesman from Wiltshire County Council highways department said that the work was subject to road safety audits throughout the construction.

She said: "Once work at the junction is completed, a stage three audit will be carried out and we can't say what modifications may be recommended until that report has been done.

"We have not heard about any accidents at that corner since the work was carried out."

Mr Collins said he would be claiming compensation from the county council for loss of earnings.

He said: "We have been open just under a year. No sooner had we opened than they closed the road to Melksham and, once that was open again, they started on this junction and the work has been going on for 28 weeks.

"It is still not finished. We have lost many thousands of pounds of business. Since they took away the traffic lights, our business has gone from strength
