A SPONSORED nesting box for Kestrels is being installed at Chippenham rugby club in a bid to encourage the birds back to the town.
Their numbers have dwindled over recent years as more barns and outdoor dwellings get converted into homes.
Rob Evans, who runs the Wings and Talons company and volunteers for the Hawk and Owl Trust, is spearheading the campaign.
He said: "Kestrels and Barn Owls are discouraged to nest in and around the town as more people convert their barns and sheds.
"We have already installed a nesting box in Bromham and are putting up two more there in the coming months.
"The birds are actually quite shy and won't come into built up places, so we need to install boxes on the edge of town.
"The area behind the rugby club is idea because there are enough trees to offer shelter and protection for the birds."
The box was sponsored by Caines Merchandising Systems, based at Bumpers Farm, who had a wild bird display at their family barbeque at the rugby club this summer.
Teresa French, from the company, said: "This is such a worthwhile cause and we are happy to support it.
"We raised about £150 for the trust and hope that the box goes someway to protecting this beautiful species."
Mr Evans, who lives in Redbridge, near Corsham, started Wings and Talons earlier this year to provide wild bird displays at parties and corporate events.
He also takes the birds to local schools to give talks to children about the importance of conservation.
He supplied a Kestrel and Barn Owl to the family barbeque at the rugby club in the summer, which led to their sponsorship of the nesting box.
