Next year, 2009, will be the 48th Bromham Carnival.
As we approach its’ 50th. Anniversary, perhaps it is time to ask why there is one at all.
Originally it began to help raise funds for our wonderful Social Centre. However, evenafter that was built and occupied, Carnival continued. It seems to me that there are 3 main reasons to keep it going.
1) To delight and entertain the children of the village (however old they are)
2) To raise some money for charities both within and outside Bromham.
3) To enhance the idea that Bromham is a community full of amazing individuals, but who can also come together to enjoy entertainment. Do you have any other ideas?
Maybe you feel it is ‘old hat’ and irrelevant in today’s world. I feel it has a link, perhaps tenuous, to the much older traditions of village gatherings in previous centuries. At least it gets some youngsters away from virtual life and into reality for a short time.
Each year the small Carnival Committee plans, budgets, argues, and physically runs all the events during Carnival fortnight. It is a fair bit of work, but also great fun, especially when something is really well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Can you tell where this is going? Yes, I am appealing for some more folk to come and join in. Why not give it a try?
