Where are the children?

Snow is so rare in Britain, at least in the south, that it is always a welcome and exciting diversion to me.

At the first sight of a single snowflake, the country falls into deep chaos. To the media and quite possibly a large proportion of the population, the prospect of a little disruption seems like the end of life as we know it. It is not just that snow is exciting – you simply cannot ignore it.

The Met Office had issued a red “take action” weather warning for the area, in which I live. The giant amounts of snow, which were forecast, failed to materialisebut I still measured 7 cm in my garden this morning.

Late morning, I went for a walk with my camera. What struck me was the fact that I only saw two children playing in the snow during my three hour walk.

At exciting times like this, children should be out in the snow playing, building snowmen, sledging and having snowball fights. Most, if not all, schools in the area were closed today.

Where were the children? Did their parents prevent them from going out or did the children prefer to stay indoors in front of their computers and televisions? I think it is a sad sign when children do not go out to play any more.

Winter in Wiltshire. Photograph Wolf Kettler. Today we managed 7cm of snow.

Judging by the amount of sledging that has been taking place on Roundway hill, I think they have all headed for high ground!

Both my boys have been out sledging, snowboarding, having snowball fights and generally messing about in it along with many others from the village, who have a brilliant time. You obviously dont know the best places to go and find them all.

They were certainly all out yesterday!  My lads were up at Cherhill the day before, and when I went to collect them there were dozens of people trudging back down the hill to Calne with sledges.

My children were positivley encouraged to go out and they had a great time in the snow, sledging, throwing the stuff around, rolling great big snowballs. I guess as Ross suggests, you don't know the best places to find them.

We live at the end of Hunts Mead, and from 8.00 til 4.00 there was a constant trail of children, parents and dogs making their way up through the valley to the best sledging hill about, I enjoyed the constant squeals of delight that echoed around the valley and couldn't resist some sledging myself, I would say on this particular day about a hundred people passed my door and it was a lovely sight.  Some friends of my children also cycled from Calne to sledge all day with mine and had a wonderful time.

My little girl was out in the village during the snow fest and we had a great time! I must admit we stayed in the village as her little legs wouldn't get her much further, particularly when she's slipping over every 10 steps! There was hardly anyone else out (we had the park to ourselves and built a big snowman) but everyone else had obviously ventured further a field.  With our make shift 'tray slay' we trudged around Bromham with much enthusiasm.  I can't imagine that even with the times changing at the rate that they seem to be, with technology and modern usage of passing time, that children will ever be shy of bombing in the snow when it falls.  Its a treat!
