Calne's road to nowhere

Mum Nikke Bennet has slammed the state of roads in Calne after she was forced to fork out for new tyres when she hit a pothole at the weekend.

Mrs Bennet, 33, of Horsepool, Bromham, has had to pay out after she hit the hole when she was driving near Mile Elm, Calne on Friday evening in her P registration Subaru Impreza.

She said: “It was dark and there was a car coming towards me so I didn’t see the hole in the road.

“I heard a massive bang and at first I thought my suspension had gone, but then I realised that my tyre was flat.

“I was on my own and I managed to get to Sainsbury’s car park where somebody helped me because I didn’t have any tools with me, but it took around two hours to fix the car because the tyre had popped and the other tyre had gone flat too.

“It was just a complete disaster. I definitely want to claim this money back.

“I pay council tax and road tax. I shouldn’t be expected to pay out for this kind of thing.”

Mrs Bennet, who works at the Castle Hotel in Devizes, then had to take her car to Swindon at the weekend so two alloy wheels could be fixed, which cost £127.

Peter Binley, highway network maintenance manager for Wiltshire Council, said: “We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused, and would encourage anyone who sees a pothole to report it to CLARENCE on 0800 232323.

“We realise how important it is to get the roads repaired after the severe weather, and our staff have been working round the clock.”

I have the same problem going along the road to Melksham near Westbrook, I hit a pothole on the left side of my car and caused two of my wheels to be damaged, which I had to get replaced, costing around over £400.  The pothole has been fixed, however I was not very happy about it

What about the A342 into devizes just before the hill that is bad and with most people driving in the middle to drive round them.
Makes for interesting driving!
Even the buses do the same and that is no fun if you are on the otherside

About 18 months ago I was driving towards Lacock along the side of Spye Park: it was raining heavily and there were puddles across half the road.  A truck came the other way and I was forced to drive through the puddle, which was concealing a deep pothole: there was an almighty bang and I had a flat tyre.  The good news was that when I finally got home I phoned the council - not only did they come out and fix the hole (though not several others near it) the same day, but they suggested I put in a claim.  I took a photo of the damage and sent it to them together with a bill for the new tyre (£45), and they paid me around £37, allowing for wear and tear on the damaged tyre.  So it's worth claiming!
Other local blackspots: a HUGE hole just past Lydeway on the Andover road, and most of the back road to Rowde.
