Women's Institute Annual Report

ANNUAL REPORT

BROMHAM WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

YEAR 2009 – 2010

Bromham W.I. has been a very busy and interesting place in the past year. Our varied programme enabled us to be shown beautiful English Manor House Gardens, the Spice Islands of the Caribbean as well as the Grand Canyon and Niagara Falls.  We learned about propagating and displaying fuchsias, how to safeguard hedgehogs and we even adopted a little one! We participated in making flowers from twigs with lots of hilarity at our attempts.  Our highlight of the year was a demonstration of beautiful Christmas Flower arrangements in December which attracted 128 members and visitors.

Apart from the regular meetings, our members were very busily involved in other events.  Some served teas at the annual Rowdeford Garden Fete in May and raised £548.50.  £150 of this money was donated to Rowdeford School.

Anne Smith was our delegate to the W.I. Federation annual meeting in June and her interesting report is included in the general meetings book.

Bromham Carnival was also held in June and some members took part in the parade on a delightful honeybee float complete with bees, a gardener and a beekeeper.  They won second place. W.I. members were also kept busy serving teas and delicious cakes to the visitors.

In July some members travelled by coach to the W.I. 90th birthday party which was greatly enjoyed by all.

Our Summer Garden Party was held in August and the colourful hat competition added to the fun.

A large number of our group went to the Celebration Food Event in Seend in November and we can hardly wait for another lively session like this one.

Our mini choir joined the other singers for the Carol concert in Salisbury Cathedral in December.  Lovely wrapped Christmas gifts were donated by members for the patients at Green Lane hospital.

Sadly, the heavy snow caused both the committee meeting and the general meeting to be cancelled in January 2010.

Several members have attended the White Horse group meetings throughout the year where Bromham group came second in a wild life photograph challenge and first in the competition for a get well card.

Eight members made cushion fronts for the County Craft competition and we received second place and a commendation.  These cushions were displayed at the Annual Meeting in Salisbury.  At this meeting one of our members won a £90 bursary for Denman College.  Two other members won the two bursaries awarded by Bromham W.I. All the winners have given reports about their courses which they found very enjoyable.

Members also told us about their trips to Bletchley Park, to Legal London and to Highgrove House.

All of our events are publicized on the Bromham village website and newly designed posters are displayed on every notice board and in all village shops.

Visitors are always welcome to come to our meetings and events and we have enrolled three new members this year.
