Bromham takes to street for party

More than 500 people turned out to see Bromham Carnival’s procession on Saturday, the culmination of two weeks of summer fun.

The procession set off from Pound Field at 2pm, led by carnival queen 15-year-old Georgina Parkin and her attendant royalty in horse-drawn carriage, lent for the day by local company Jackson’s Hire.

The queen attendant was 12-year-old Charlotte Bassett, the princess Faye Dyke, eight, princess attendant Chloe Ringstead, nine, Butterfly Princess Bobbie Clarke, 12, her attendant Imogen Mornement, 11, Prince Harry Clarke, nine, and his attendant Kiel Bassett, nine.

The Fairy Princess was four-year-old Alice Lawrence and the Young Prince was Cane Spencer, six.

Carnival co-secretary Mo Edwards said: “It was a lovely procession and we had a lot of people come along to see it. We had lots of walking entries with the Lion, the Witch and Wardrobe; the Owl and Pussycat and Bob the Builder among the most memorable.”

It was the culmination of a fortnight of community events, including a skittles competition, bingo, quiz nights, wheelbarrow races and a Mad Hatter’s tea party.

There was a fun horse racing night at the Greyhound and the fortnight kicked off with a very popular treasure hunt and classic car display. Mrs Edwards said: “We had slightly fewer people to the events than in previous years, but that’s only to be expected in the present economic climate.

“All in all, it has been a big success and Saturday went very well.”

The procession was followed by a fair, opened by Georgina Parkin on the Jubilee Field. Devizes samba band Oi Sambistas and the Wyvern Band played and majorette groups Angels with Attitude from Trowbridge and Britannia Majorettes from Swindon took part.
